Near-field heat transfer in many-body systems: from theory to applications

Abstract:

This lecture explores the fundamental mechanisms of radiative heat transfer at the nanoscale, where evanescent electromagnetic fields enable energy exchanges far exceeding the blackbody limit. Particular emphasis is placed on many-body interactions, which give rise to collective effects, non-additive heat exchanges, and anomalous transport regimes ranging from diffusion to superdiffusion and ballistic propagation. Using fluctuational electrodynamics and a generalized random-walk description, we examine how thermal energy propagates through networks of interacting nanoparticles. The seminar also introduces thermotronics, a field exploiting thermal photons to control heat flow and process information through radiative thermal diodes, transistors, memories, and logic gates.

Thermal photonics in non-reciprocal and time-modulated many-body systems

Abstract:

This lecture presents emerging approaches for actively controlling radiative heat transfer through the breaking of electromagnetic reciprocity. We first investigate magneto-optical many-body systems, where external magnetic fields induce asymmetric energy exchanges and unconventional phenomena such as the photon thermal Hall effect. We then explore spin-controlled radiative heat transport, showing how spatial gradients of electromagnetic spin angular momentum can drive heat currents even in the absence of a temperature gradient. Finally, we discuss time-modulated photonic systems, where dynamic modulation of optical properties enables frequency conversion and directional control of thermal radiation. These mechanisms open new perspectives for active thermal management, heat routing, and radiative energy pumping at the nanoscale.

Near-field heat transfer in extreme near-field regime

Abstract:

This lecture explores radiative heat transfer at nanometric and subnanometric separations, where conventional fluctuational electrodynamics may become insufficient. We first examine the role of nonlocal optical response and acoustic phonons in heat exchanges between closely spaced polar materials. Particular emphasis is placed on the emergence of correlations between thermal fluctuations in distinct bodies, a mechanism which is not present in the conventional independent-source description. Using a microscopic coupled-oscillator model and a Green-tensor formulation, we show how the hybridization of surface phonon-polaritons generates fluctuating-current cross correlations that can strongly enhance heat transfer. For materials such as SiC, these effects can lead to heat fluxes exceeding conventional predictions by more than an order of magnitude, opening new perspectives for radiative heat transport in strongly coupled and correlated systems.
